On Monday, To Write Love on Her Arms launched their annual campaign for National Suicide Prevention Week and World Suicide Prevention Day. This year’s theme is “We’ll See You Tomorrow.” It’s a theme that resonated with me because when you’re struggling with mental illness or contemplating suicide, it’s easy to forget that there’s something brighter ahead. You forget that there’s always tomorrow.
There’s a stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide. It’s something we’re told not to talk about. If you speak out and share your story, people say you’re crazy or that you’re just looking for attention. The amount of judgment you receive is unimaginable, and quite frankly, it’s unfair. Society tells us that showing your pain makes you weak and putting on a happy face makes you strong. But I don’t believe that this is true.
This idea is what causes so many people to suffer in silence. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t suffered some sort of pain in their life. We all go through tough times, experience moments of sadness, and question the life we’re living. As humans, we can all relate to pain. So, why are we told to hide it? And just as importantly, why do we listen?
National Suicide Prevention Week is about breaking the silence surrounding suicide and mental illness. It’s about starting conversations, sharing stories, and working to break the stigma. It’s about letting people know that it’s okay to hurt, and it’s okay to ask for help. It’s about realizing that, whatever you’re going through, you are not alone. Hope is real, and rescue is possible.
When I was deep in my depression and felt like I couldn’t go on, I just remember thinking, “this is never going to get better. I’m never going to make it through today.” Looking back, I wish I knew then what I know now. I wish I knew that life wasn’t always going to be that way and that I would get to experience happiness, love, joy, etc. I wish I knew that one day, I would smile and actually mean it. I wish I realized that my best days were ahead.
Suicide means a story ends too soon. It means dreams are never realized, families lose a loved one, and tomorrow is never seen. “We’ll See You Tomorrow” is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there’s always tomorrow. There’s always hope for a brighter future and a chance for things to get better. The moment that you’re in right now won’t last. Your story doesn’t need to end today. Just focus on tomorrow.
You’ll see me tomorrow because my story isn’t over, and I have so much more to offer the world. I know that tomorrow is a new day and a new beginning. You’ll see me tomorrow because I’ve come so far, and there’s so much more that I want to experience. I truly believe that the best things in life are ahead of me. This is just the beginning of my story. You’ll see me tomorrow.
